The English Department works towards the vision of enhancing the linguistic competence and communication skills of students. It also engages students to develop critical thinking, gender sensitisation, concern for fellow beings and thus develop humane values and respect for all fellow beings irrespective of their background.

Ballari has a large section of students from marginalised communities and first  generation learners in particular. It is important to equip them to take on the challenges of the modern world. The Department conducts various classroom activities to train students in acquiring the basic language learning skills of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. In addition, it also helps students to use their own resources to translate from regional languages. Students from rural backgrounds and regional mediums of instruction in particular make gradual progress from the First semester through the final semester by which time they are prepared to face job interviews confidently. Role plays, Seminars, Individual and Group Presentations, games and Group activities are conducted to engage students. Through these they learn to work in teams and thereby also develop social skills.

The Department also takes initiative to familiarise students with preparation for various competitive exams which test reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and writing skills.

Dr.Suchetha Pai Javali is a PhD from Bangalore University. Her specialisation is in the field of translation and linguistics.  Conversant with English, Kannada, Hindi and Telugu she has also offered translation services as a freelancer. She also writes poetry and articles in English and Kannada.

She is very passionate about teaching and uses many creative learning methods which help students to develop a desire for learning beyond   the curriculum.
